Lahore police arrest 5,934 in illegal arms crackdown

LAHORE : Lahore Police have arrested 5,934 suspects and registered 5,880 cases during the current year as part of an intensified campaign against illegal weapons, public display of firearms and aerial firing, officials said on Monday.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana said the police were following a zero-tolerance policy towards the illegal possession and use of weapons, warning that anyone violating the law would face strict legal action.

In a statement, the CCPO directed police officers to take firm action against individuals involved in the illegal sale and purchase of firearms. He also ordered a crackdown on people who openly display weapons in public and those involved in the so-called dala culture, in which armed individuals use weapons to intimidate others or demonstrate power.

Kamyana stressed that police must act without discrimination against those involved in aerial firing, particularly during celebrations and public gatherings, where gunfire can put innocent lives at risk. He also instructed officers to monitor social media accounts used to display firearms and identify individuals who promote or glorify the unlawful use of weapons.

The CCPO said maintaining law and order and protecting citizens remained the top priorities of Lahore Police. He made it clear that the force would not show leniency towards anyone whose illegal possession or use of firearms threatened public safety.

According to a Lahore Police spokesperson, the ongoing operation has continued across the city, with law enforcement teams taking action against suspects involved in various arms-related offences. The arrests and registered cases reflect the scale of the campaign aimed at curbing the circulation of illegal weapons and preventing their misuse.

Police have also recovered a substantial quantity of firearms during the operation. The seized weapons include 123 rifles, 49 Kalashnikovs, 145 guns, more than 5,000 pistols and 217 revolvers.

Officials said the crackdown would continue to prevent the unlawful possession of weapons, discourage the public display of firearms and deter aerial firing. The police leadership has directed field officers to remain vigilant and ensure that those involved in such activities face action under the law.

The campaign forms part of Lahore Police’s broader efforts to strengthen public security and prevent incidents involving the misuse of firearms across the provincial capital.
