University girl commits suicide after travel agent defrauds her of Rs5m

ISLAMABAD: The gold medallist university girl student who committed suicide after a travel agent defrauded her of Rs5 million was laid to rest in Islamabad on Saturday.

Family members and relatives paid their last respect to 20-year-old Laiba Ijaz, an International Islamic University student, at her funeral in Sector G-10 after which she was laid to rest in H-11 graveyard.

According to police, Laiba Ija was preparing to move to the United States and had paid Rs5 million to the agent for the process. In return, the agent handed her the travel documents, which were later found to be fake, leaving the girl in distress.

Afterwards, on Friday, she left her house at around 2:00 pm, telling her mother she would return in a while. However, she did not return as expected. Her mother then informed her father, a shopkeeper, that Laiba had not returned.

Subsequently, the family began looking for her, and with the help of mobile phone tracking, located her. They found her body hanging from a tree in Sector G-10.

The police were informed, who reached the spot and shifted the body to the hospital.

In a related development, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director Shahzad Bukhari has taken notice of the girl student’s death due to the travel agent’s fraud and ordered an action against him.

The FIA officials have contacted Laiba’s family and sought all the details. Laiba’s uncle Rana Amjad confirmed FIA’s move.
