Govt begins river embankment survey before monsoon

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has ordered a countrywide survey of river embankments to strengthen flood preparedness ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

As part of early safety measures, authorities have approved a joint inspection aimed at reducing the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas. The Federal Flood Commission has sent an official letter to the irrigation departments of all four provinces, directing them to begin the assessment without delay.

Provincial officials have been asked to examine the condition of embankments along rivers, identify any structural weaknesses, and recommend urgent repair work where needed. The purpose of the survey is to ensure that preventive steps are taken in time to avoid damage during heavy rains.

The commission has also instructed the provinces to compile detailed reports after completing the inspections. These reports will help the federal government allocate funds and start necessary repair work before the monsoon begins.

According to the directive, all survey findings must be submitted by May 15 so that flood prevention plans can be finalized well in advance.
